Faith, Legacy & Purpose: The Palmers on Nonprofit Leadership

August 20, 2025

In this uplifting episode of the Senior Home Companions Podcast, host Kirstin McCarthy extends her dialogue with Dave and Cindy Palmer—the dedicated founders of Purposeful Design and Heart Change. Their remarkable journey showcases dedication, steadfast faith, and determination as they've built two transformative nonprofits. They candidly share how they maintain their spiritual foundation, the way faith strengthens their partnership, and the lasting legacy they aspire to create. From humble beginnings organizing donated goods to revitalizing entire communities, their journey provides valuable insights for anyone called to meaningful community outreach.

Nurturing Their Faith Foundation

Leading a nonprofit can feel like weathering constant storms. The Palmers remain centered through intentional spiritual retreats and dedicating time to deepening their faith walk. "As we both mature in our relationship with the Lord, we become better partners and more capable leaders," David explains. This spiritual anchor enables them to face challenges without depending solely on their own abilities.

David emphasizes, "Our responsibility is to stay faithful to the individuals God places in our path. He takes care of the outcomes." This perspective provides both tranquility and sustainability to their ministry work.

Guidance for Couples Embracing Their Call

"Begin with prayer," David advises. "Discover where God is already working—then step in alongside Him there." He reflects on his own path starting through volunteer work at a pregnancy support center. "My first task was organizing baby supplies," he chuckles. "But it was all groundwork for future opportunities."

Cindy contributes, "You were designed for meaningful impact. Pay attention to that inner voice. Your talents are essential, and there are roles created specifically for you."

Measuring Success in Ministry Endeavors

For Purposeful Design, genuine success extends well beyond basic job placement—they focus on complete life restoration. "We witness people transition from despair to renewed hope, from instability to firm footing, from struggling to genuinely flourishing," David explains. The organization currently assists over 250 people each year, with 200 advancing directly into stable employment. Remarkably, 85% of their operating expenses are covered through revenue from selling premium furniture created by program participants.

Heart Change measures success through restored dignity and strengthened family structures. "We're growing our trauma recovery programs and early childhood education initiatives," Cindy explains. "Our goal is making sure every child enters school prepared to excel."

Future Outlook: Their Tomorrow Vision

Purposeful Design continues concentrating on enhancing operational effectiveness, building stronger internal systems, and growing their staff while expanding their impact. Heart Change prioritizes skill building, comprehensive trauma recovery services, and disrupting cycles of generational poverty.

"You were designed for moments of divine possibility. Don't let them pass you by."
