Honor Your Elders: Celebrating Older Americans Month
May represents Older Americans Month, an annual celebration coordinated by the Administration for Community Living (ACL) to recognize the incredible contributions seniors have made throughout our communities. This year's inspiring theme is "Make Your Mark," and we at Senior Home Companions are honoring the significant impact our The Villages clients have made in their neighborhoods through various heartfelt approaches. During these challenging times, we're also recognizing how each of us can create positive change through collaboration and kindness.
The Origins of Older Americans Month
The tradition of Older Americans Month began in 1963. During that era, approximately one-third of America's elderly population lived in poverty, prompting the federal government to address the growing challenges affecting seniors nationwide.
President John F. Kennedy, working alongside the National Council of Senior Citizens, established the inaugural "Senior Citizens Month," which later evolved into today's "Older Americans Month." Since Kennedy's presidency, every U.S. president has issued an official proclamation encouraging Americans to recognize the valuable contributions of older generations, both historical and contemporary, with special emphasis during Memorial Day to commemorate veterans who served our nation.
Ways to Participate and Show Appreciation

Here are some thought-provoking conversation starters from the ACL that can spark meaningful discussions among family members of all generations:
- What accomplishment brings you the greatest pride?
- What special talent or capability do you possess that others might not know about?
- Reflecting on your life, is there an opportunity you wish you had pursued?
- What would you like others to understand about who you really are?
- How would you describe the caregiving journey? What insights did you gain?
