The Importance of Effective Communication in Senior Care
In May 2021, Senior Home Companions organized a comprehensive educational workshop dedicated to exploring effective communication strategies in senior care. The expert panel featured respected Naples area professionals and experienced team members, addressing practical questions from our companion caregivers. This educational workshop was recorded at a local community center in Naples, with the footage distributed among caregivers internally, providing valuable insights on enhancing interactions with clients and their families. Additional live follow-up sessions with the expert panel are scheduled for future implementation.
Expert Panel Participation
The expert panelists demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm for joining this crucial discussion, focusing specifically on intentional and effective communication strategies. "I was thrilled to join this panel because I understand that intentional communication is absolutely critical when providing care for senior clients, particularly regarding meaningful conversation," explained Liz Erickson, Senior Home Companions Caregiver.
Ashley Armstrong, RN, MSN, Registered Nurse Liaison at Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice, emphasized that communication often doesn't receive the focus it deserves, particularly when coordinating care teams serving multiple clients. "I believe communication is a critical component in healthcare that sometimes doesn't get the emphasis it deserves," she explained. "It truly makes a significant difference in their overall care and how effectively everyone collaborates."
The Vital Role of Communication in Senior Care
Among the most crucial aspects of communication is the comfort and confidence it brings to clients and their families. "It's a fundamental part of their overall safety, wellness and their ability to maintain their daily routines," explained Alicia Reese, Senior Home Companions 2020 Caregiver Ambassador of the Year. "Without proper communication, you cannot provide quality care."
Strong communication skills also enable seniors aging at home to maintain greater independence. "I believe especially in senior care, we often assume we know what's best for our clients," explained panel moderator Sabrina Straub, MSW, LCSW, Marian University Field Director and Assistant Professor of Social Work. "However, I believe active listening is crucial to understand their true needs, and when possible, to honor their preferences. And when they make choices that we might consider risky, we need to share our concerns respectfully while maintaining their dignity."
The expert panel also shared practical communication strategies, with Erickson emphasizing that "active listening is extremely important when providing care for senior clients, along with demonstrating patience and speaking at a measured pace."
Collaborating with Senior Home Companions
Our organization was fortunate to feature both Naples community professionals and internal team members on the panel, providing diverse viewpoints and expert insight for our caregiver attendees. "In my role as a social worker, effective communication is essential," noted Straub. "The more I can share knowledge about social work methods, the more it will benefit everyone by enhancing listening skills and communication abilities."
The strong communication practices between Senior Home Companions leadership and their caregivers was also highlighted by internal panel members. "During my interview process, I was impressed by the welcoming environment and the quality of communication I experienced," mentioned Reese. "They invest considerable effort into ensuring they match the right caregiver to provide the specific care each client truly needs. To me, this demonstrates their commitment to excellence."
