The Advantages of Combining Caregiver Services with Hospice Care
Senior Home Companions recently organized an extensive educational seminar for companion caregivers, highlighting the substantial advantages of collaborating with hospice services for our clients and their loved ones. This enlightening panel featured representatives from numerous local care organizations throughout Florida, and the recorded seminar was distributed internally among our team members. Selecting Hospice Services
Making the choice to seek hospice or palliative care for your elderly family member can be challenging, but it provides invaluable assistance when someone is facing end-of-life circumstances or dealing with any life-limiting condition. Multiple Sarasota-area specialists on our panel discussed their personal experiences with hospice care and family bereavement, which inspired their choice to enter this field and take part in our educational seminar.
Jessica Malson, BSW, Hospice Care Coordinator with Brookdale Hospice, told her story: "I have direct experience with not only hospice services but specifically Brookdale Hospice after unexpectedly losing my father in October of 2020. My mother received support from our team in early December of 2020, before she was reunited with her husband once more. This personal experience deepened my understanding of hospice care's importance and strengthened my commitment to helping other families receive that same exceptional care."
Addressing Common Hospice Misconceptions
Numerous panelists also participated to help eliminate the stigma surrounding discussions about hospice care. "I decided to participate in this panel to ensure that seminar attendees identify common misconceptions, allowing us to clarify and correct them for a better understanding of hospice and palliative services," stated Dustin Withers, Spiritual Care Coordinator with Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice.
We believe this educational seminar helps both caregivers and families in becoming more comfortable when discussing palliative care options. "I believe it's essential to provide this type of education to caregivers because it remains such a sensitive topic," noted Tawni Risse, Clinical Liaison and Patient Care Navigator with Paradigm Health. "People are often reluctant to participate in these conversations. It's especially important for caregivers to provide their clients and families with knowledge that allows them to advocate for their own healthcare choices."
Education and Empowerment
Providing empowerment and education about available family care options represents a fundamental objective for Senior Home Companions, along with our seminar panel experts. "Providing caregivers with resources to demonstrate to families that 'This isn't as frightening as I believed, this actually provides significant benefits,' helps them feel confident when making informed decisions for their loved ones," shared Malson.
As discussed in our previous seminar session from May 2021, effective communication between clients, families, and caregivers significantly impacts quality of life. "Our previous seminar highlighted communication strategies while this session concentrated specifically on hospice care," mentioned Ashley Armstrong, RN, MSN, Registered Nurse Liaison with Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice (who also contributed to May's panel). "I felt it was essential to share my knowledge, our organization's expertise, and help provide this valuable education."
Enhanced communication allows our caregivers to fully understand both their responsibilities and the hospice team's responsibilities when supporting clients, delivering improved peace of mind to families and their senior loved ones during frequently difficult periods.
"I've observed there's significant confusion, and I believe this discussion helps reassure many caregivers by clarifying their specific role," said Paige Gilbert, Client Manager with Senior Home Companions, who assisted in organizing the panel. "I think when we provide that clarity, more caregivers feel equipped to assist these clients and understand what to anticipate in the home environment, ultimately benefiting both the client and their family."
