September Caregiver Ambassador of the Month: Winnie Ellis

October 19, 2021

Winnie Ellis has been chosen as our September Caregiver Ambassador of the Month for her exceptional care delivery, delightful personality and impressive ability to adapt to varying client requirements. Winnie has been working with the Senior Home Companions office in Naples for three years, and she has made a tremendous positive impact on her clients and coworkers.

Winnie's exceptional care standards

This recognition came to Winnie through a nomination from Client Coordinator Katianna St. Henry, who emphasized Winnie's excellent care quality and dependable communication skills. Before joining the Senior Home Companions team, Winnie also cared for her own parents until they passed away and worked as a professional senior caregiver for many years. "I moved from Illinois where I had been doing this type of work for about ten years," Winnie shared. "I came to Florida and was providing care for a private client who passed away, so I discovered Senior Home Companions, filled out an application and here I am, three wonderful years later."

Developing strong connections with clients

When serving Senior Home Companions clients, Winnie's personality and dedication always shine through, making her a preferred choice among families. "She has a delightful personality and excellent sense of humor that clients often call to compliment," Katianna observed. "Our Naples office has gotten many calls from clients asking specifically for Winnie! She treats family members with respect and shows willingness to meet their needs."

Recently, Winnie showed her flexibility and dependability when a client's family prepared for their loved one to move outside of Senior Home Companion's coverage area. "She cared for the client and kept open communication with SHC, the client and family members to ensure a smooth transition," Katianna explained. "Winnie had been caring for this client for a long time and was able to provide comfort during this difficult period. The family was incredibly thankful for having Winnie and the outstanding care she provided until our services were no longer needed. Her quality of care remained consistent throughout the entire process."

Winnie's advice for fellow caregivers

When asked what advice she would give to a new caregiver, Winnie said, "When you first arrive, ask lots of questions. Don't just come in trying to change everything. We're there for them so we need to understand their viewpoint." She also shared tips for clients who might have difficulty accepting a new caregiver, "Sometimes you need to give them space at first. Gradually you move closer and show your kindness. Eventually, they start to trust and feel comfortable."

Winnie loves sharing how much she has come to care for her clients over the years. "It becomes very easy to truly love your clients," Winnie explained. "Come in with a loving heart, just being yourself. Just be real, be patient and show that you're there for them no matter what. Soon enough, they're hugging you and welcoming you into their family."

Through our improved Caregiver Ambassador program for 2021, each caregiver recipient has the opportunity to choose a Florida nonprofit organization to receive a donation made in their name. Winnie chose Neighborlink Naples, saying, "I wish I could pick all of them, but that organization really spoke to me. It touched my heart."

Winnie gives care, and Senior Home Companions does too

Winnie has stayed committed to Senior Home Companions because of the support they give not just to clients, but to their caregivers and staff members as well. "I love this company because they really get it," she said. "They understand you're here helping others and then you have to go home and take care of your own family too. They provide such flexibility and we all work together so well."

The feeling is mutual — with Katianna highlighting the incredible care that Winnie provides to clients, office staff and other caregivers. "She gladly mentors new caregivers to help make sure they're ready to handle all the duties required for the client," Katianna shared. "Even in challenging situations, she remains positive and always encourages others to keep the same outlook. Thank you Winnie for treating all clients and staff with respect and always going above and beyond."
